Flipping around last night I saw about 3 seconds of the ESPY preview before settling on Dog the Bounty Hunter. That was quite enough thanks. The ESPYs peaked in 1998, when the almost but not quite worldwide leader showed a pair and let Norm Macdonald up on stage to say whatever the hell he wanted. Jokes about the Cowboys and crack, Heisman winners and double murder, Barkley and plate glass windows, the look of sheer horror on the faces of the crowd, the awkward gasps, even today it makes me fall over laughing. Back then ESPN was big, but not the Disney ran monster it is today. Something like Norm’s monologue will never grace the airwaves of ESPN again, as these days they have no spine and would never bite the hand that feeds them.
I can only imagine the tasteless Erin Andrews, Ben Roethlisberger, and Brett Favre jokes he could have come up with this year. It would have been epic. Instead you get sanitized boring drivel that I hope the 4 of you out there that watched it enjoyed.
