Former West Virginia Mountaineer cager Mike Gansey has signed a contract to play for the CB Canarias of the LEB Gold League in Spain for the 2010 season. Gansey had at least one offer to join an NBA camp, but when he looked over the roster Gansey decided to take the overseas job at six figures as opposed to joining a camp, getting cut and winding up back in the D-League. Gansey was quoted by GoErie.com saying, “I’m definitely making a heck of a lot more than I did in the D-League, that’s for sure.”
I’m excited for Gansey, the NBA Vegas Summer League was the first time I had a chance to see him play since his Mountaineer days. He still plays with the same leave it all out on the floor style he had back then. On the plus side he still has a sweet stroke, and on the negative I think he may be too small to be a true NBA 2 guard, and was a bit of a defensive liability. At 6-4 190, it seems he never quite filled out weight wise after the staph infections. If it had not been for the city of Cleveland and its staph, I firmly believe that he would have an extra 20 pounds on him and be on an NBA roster today.
One of my favorite memories of Gansey’s Mountaineer playing days was the nickname my buddy Josh, who has little sports acumen, came up with, “Gansey the Pansy”. Yeah it looks bad, but whenever Mike would pop a three or dunk on some fool he would yell, “You got powned by Gansey the Pansy!” It was a term of endearment, and I have never seen him get that excited about sporting events since Gansey graduated. That’s how fun to watch Gansey was, he made a non sports guy give him a pet name and watch his every move.
For some good reading check out Gansey’s blog, which hasn’t been updated since April, but is still a great read if you want to catch up with an old Mountaineer Hero. Good luck Mike, show Spain how the ‘eers do it!
