Leftwich sprains knee, Big Ben’s suspension reduced to 4 games

Mike Tomlin’s choice for opening day quarterback was made for him by virtue of Byron Leftwich suffering a 2nd degree pull of his MCL in last nights final preseason game. The good news is that there was no tear of the ligiment, and the expected recovery time is 2-4 weeks. The injury will firmly put Dennis Dixon at the helm of the Steelers Offense for at least the first two games of the season. I predict that if Dixon preforms well in the first two, he will get to run out the string until Big Ben returns.

Speaking of Large Ben, the commish has decided to reduce Big Ben’s suspension from 6 games to 4. There were some rumblings about Ben and the Steelers asking for even more of a reduction to 3 games, but that obviously did not happen. I wish it had, I have tickets to game 4 vs Baltimore.

In fantasy football world I think Dixon will play well, but is not a good choice as a starter. The expected suspension reduction for Big Ben will put him into 10th-12th rounds in this weekends drafts. Ben could be used as part of a draft strategy that involves grabbing a lame duck starting QB for the first 4 games in the late rounds while using the early rounds to stockpile backs and receivers.
